Are There Dietary Triggers to dog seizures? In this day and age we are all aware eating a low quality diet of fast food or highly processed foods can lead to many health related problems. Canine Epilepsy and your dog's health overall can be PAWSitivly affected through your dog's nutrition.There are so many choices for canine nutrition but when you add the wrinkle of dog seizures it actually helps narrow the field. We have learned that many low quality dog foods and treats contain all kinds of fillers and by products that have no nutritional value. We have also learned that a low quality diet can contribute to many other dog health related issues including, allergies, hypertension, weight problems, nervousness just to name a few. We understand that purchasing a high quality dog food may not fit into everyone's budget. Canine epilepsy can be expensive! But High Quality doesn’t have to mean high cost. One of PINK PAWSitive's goals is to give you information on canine nutrition that will fit into anyone's budget. We recommend before making any changes to your dog's current diet you contact your Vet. While discussing dog nutrition it is important to consider Hypoglycemia. This condition can also contribute to dog seizures. Through our research and our dog journal, we eventually learned that a few of BUG's seizures may have been triggered by Hypoglycemia. It's not just WHAT you feed your dog, but WHEN! Following a 5 small meal a day rule will keep your dog's blood sugar up and sustain energy. For more information see our page on HYPOGLYCEMIA. We would also like to mention supplements. There are several good natural products on the market that can be useful in helping your dog reduce their anxiety. Anxiety is a trigger that occurs during the Aura phase and maybe be controlled by the use of supplements. PINK PAWSitive is currently researching other dietary triggers to dog seizures. We have also found that there may be some natural, organic hazards to dog health. Some plants are even toxic to your pet.We plan to bring you more information in this area after some additional research because we don’t want the tail wagging the dog. We do know however that Azalea can cause severe harm as well as Eucalyptus. Periwinkle can trigger seizures. Please check in frequently to see what new things we have learned.
